Best Heart Rate Monitor: Polar FT60 Men’s Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Well it’s no secret that I am quite heavily into fitness and exercise. So when my husband decided to surprise me on my birthday with a Polar FT60 I wanted to share my experiences and review this heart rate monitor.

Now initially I admit I have never owned one of these before, I’ve had pedometers in the past and very basic and cheap monitors but nothing quite as elaborate as the Polar FT60 heart rate monitor watch. I also have to admit I was a little surprised at the price of heart rate monitors in general, not this particular one but all brands and that is mainly because I was unaware of the extent of functions and great features on offer with a good heart rate monitor. For the record the Polar is actually one of the better value watches.

So what does it do? I thought, other than take your heart rate while you work out. Well I was about to find out, and be suitably impressed in the process with the FT60 men’s heart rate monitor.

What to Look for When Buying a Heart Rate Monitor

  • Consider what your personal fitness needs & goals are
  • What is your budget?
  • Look for a monitor with a chest strap
  • Display size

Consider what your Personal Fitness Needs & Goals are

Do you want to lose weight, improve your cardiovascular condition or set personal training targets? Everyone has a different need, but one thing is for sure, that monitoring your heart rate while working out is the best way to tell if you are working hard enough or alternatively too hard.

The Polar FT60 is an advanced heart rate monitor which has many excellent features including a personalized training program, giving you weekly training targets whilst providing feedback to help you achieve your goals acting like a personal trainer. The Polar FT60 also displays your heart rate in different formats including as a percentage of your maximum, as beats per minute and graphical, it will also alarm you if your heart rate exceeds or dips below your target sounding an alarm.

What is your Budget?

There are many types of heart rate monitor and again depending on what your goals are, should determine what you are prepared to pay. Generally speaking, heart rate monitors vary in price from around $35 to $400 and most reviewers generally agree that you get what you pay for. Cheaper ones will be easier to use as they have far less functions but obviously they do a lot less and can also pick up a lot of interference from other monitors or gym equipment which will result in erratic heart rate readings.

Look for a Monitor with a Chest Strap

If you only want to find out your heart rate and not much else then you can buy a cheaper heart rate monitor which will basically do just that. However if you are serious about exercising then you should pick one with a chest strap, they are more accurate and generally come with many more features to help you achieve your fitness goals. The chest strap picks up your heart rate and transfers this data wirelessly to the watch. The Polar heart rate monitors come with a soft textile strap which in my experience is comfortable to wear and I experienced no chaffing.

Display Size

Display size is quite important because you will normally be reading the information at arm’s length during your training. If you are cycling, you may have the display attached to the handle bars for example. A back-light is useful too especially when training in dusk or dark. The Polar FT60features a backlight and an easy to read black and white display screen.

“Love it! Best investment ever”

“Best HRM out there”

Negatives

The FT60 comes in a choice of background display colours, red and black & white. Some reviewers who have purchased the red version have commented that the display reads fine when outside but in an exercise class with artificial lighting, the display is hard to read. My recommendation would be to make sure to purchase the black and whet version, this has no problems whatsoever with light in an exercise class.
